A Letter To Tosha

Dear Tosha,

I once mentioned Air Supply in one of my blog posts and you found it funny. So funny, in fact, that you haven’t let me forget about it. I appreciate that.

That being said, my intent for this letter is to litter it with Air Supply lyrics. In fact I planned on starting this letter with lyrics from the song, “Every Woman in the World” but the lyrics I chose were a bit too suggestive to start a letter with.

The mailman might’ve confiscated it.

I felt like I needed multiple paragraphs to explain myself so it doesn’t come off as creepy when I say Air Supply says:

“Girl, you’re every woman in the world to me. You’re everything I need, you’re everything to me.”

This letter is going to get weird in a hurry, so before it does I’ll describe myself in three words, just like you asked.

Witty, stubborn, and always-stuck-between-slow-walkers-and-a-dead-end”. I hope hyphenated words count as one!

When I was a kid, my dad listened to his Air Supply CD every Saturday morning – so it seemed. He would turn the volume up and the noise would penetrate my bedroom door. I didn’t have a choice.

So I learned a bunch of their songs and still remember them. Aren’t you lucky!?

You told me that you live in a pineapple under the sea. I couldn’t quite locate that on a map, so I looked for it on Google. I found out it was a reference to Spongebob.

But before I found that, I found it’s description on Urban Dictionary which was definitely not PG. And it was definitely not Spongebob related. I hope.

I never watched Spongebob as a kid. I think I gave it a chance once, but it didn’t pull me in. I wasn’t interested. Do I like sponges? They’re okay. Do I like people named Bob? Ha. Ask again later.

With winter in full swing and the holidays approaching, I can’t help but worry about your well-being in this pineapple under the sea. Hasn’t it frozen over?

But before you answer that, I interrupt this letter to bring you lyrics from the 1979 hit song, “Lost in Love”. Take it away!

“Lost in love and I don’t know much, was I thinking aloud and fell out of touch? But I’m back on my feet and eager to be what you needed.”

When I originally had this idea of sharing lyrics from Air Supply songs, I didn’t realize that they would all be love songs. Oy vey.

By now, I realize it looks like I’m serenading you and I apologize if this feels awkward, but I don’t feel awkward…yet.

You asked me why Air Supply did a cover of Good Girl. It took me a while to figure out why, since I didn’t know what Good Girl was.

Wait! Hold up! “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” just came on all by itself.

IT KNOWS.

“I know just how to whisper and I know just how to cry, I know just where to find the answer and I know just how to lie.

“I know just how to fake it and I know just how to scheme. I know just when to face the truth and then I know just when to dream.”

*Resting my fingers*

“And I’m never gonna tell you everything I gotta tell you but I know I gotta give it a try”

“But I don’t know how to leave you and I’ll never let you fall. And I don’t know how you do it, making love out of nothing at all.”

Whew. I’m tired. Powerful lyrics, eh? I typed that out as they sang it. Tougher than it sounds. They’re in the chorus now.

I’m not even ashamed that I like these songs. I pride myself on liking things people don’t expect me to like. That being said, not a word of this to anyone.

Back to your question about Air Supply covering Good Girl, which I found out is a Carrie Underwood song. (I hope?)

They did a cover of that song for three reasons.

1. They like Carrie Underwood.
2. They needed something to do.
3. They liked the way the lyrics to the song exited their mouth and, seemingly, floated on the clouds – just like the rest of their music.

That’s all there was to it.

This is the part of the letter where I get serious for a bit.

I can’t remember how or when I first came across your blog, Tosha, but I’m glad I did. I have no reservations in saying that you are the best poet I know, as well as my favourite.

I’ve told you this before, but it’s worth repeating. The poems you write are beautiful, touching, and downright incredible. I simply don’t know how you’re able to continuously churn out poem after poem, each one eclipsing the quality of the last.

You’ve been an inspiration to me as I started dipping my toes in the poetry genre this year. Whenever you told me you liked one of my poems, it gave me the confidence to write more.

It was as if Michael Jordan told me I was good at basketball.

Please never stop sharing your poems or your song covers. You’re probably the most talented person I follow on WordPress and there is no heir apparent.

So yeah, keep on keepin’ on.

I don’t know why I said that last line, I’m not Southern. I’m from Canada! Let me try it in Canadian lingo.

Keep the beavers off the ice, eh.

Nailed it.

I leave you with lyrics from one more Air Supply song. This one is called, “All Out Of Love”.

“I’m all out of love, what am I without you? I can’t be too late, to say that I was so wrong?”

Alright, now it’s becoming a bit creepy. Just now, though. Not three songs ago.

Tosha, I hope you have a great holiday – whichever one you may celebrate in your pineapple under the sea. Festivus?

With an endless amount of Air Supply,

Your Canadian Friend

  1. This had it all drama, comedy, a cheesy soundtrack. Air supply would be proud of you. Thank you so much. You made me laugh, you brought me to the brink of tears. It was an emotional roller coaster of Canadian goodness. You really should have your own column. There’s a certain Dave Barry like quality to your words. If you don’t know who that is, shame on you. Ha ha I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Thank your lucky stars Donald Trump isn’t your president. Just had to get that in. I appreciate you, your writing, your sense of humor, and your hockey loving sensibility.

I don’t know who Dave Barry is but just looked up some of his stuff and your comparison is spot on. I’m so glad you liked the letter. Halfway through I almost stopped because I didn’t think i was doing you justice. You have a great Christmas as well, and try not to think too much about politics! Lol

“Lost in Love” is a great Air Supply song. We must have great taste, because I also love Tosha’s poetry. I even went so far as to create a special songs account with soundcloud, so I could place my favorite discoveries on there, which must equal a double-album set of Tosha’s songs. I truly believe she does the best version of certain Christmas tunes I have ever heard!

In one of my posts, I thank the band, Air Supply, for being brave enough to stand up to boycotters and coming to play continued concerts in Israel over the years and for supplying 200 tickets to firemen’s wives to their recent concerts in Israel, delayed until Israel could get raging fires under control (over 80,000 people were evacuated and many have become homeless when theirs burnt down).

So, I’ll add my own saying, which means the same as the beaver thing: Don’t fret the fretwork!

And have yourself a highly-oxygenated holiday!

First of all….Tim and his siblings love Air Supply. Not “rock” enough for me. Tell your Dad I’m sorry. Even though I appreciate his belting out love songs. I don’t know Tosha’s blog but will check it out thanks to this letter. 😃

I’ve missed your letters! Luckily, this blog I found, called “The Captain’s Speech” has distracted me pretty well. You should check it out! 😉
