I Write Poetry?

I don’t even know if I said that correctly. Should it be, “I Write Poems?” No clue. I’m new here. Check out my name tag.

Anyways, I feel the need to explain myself. Normally, I don’t like explaining why I post the things I post. Doing so feels like I’m giving you a free behind-the-scenes tour of my brain. I’d rather charge money for those tours. Let me know if you’re interested!

The fact of the matter is, my last two posts have been poems. I think they caught many of you off guard.

So, why the poems? Why now?

No reason. And yet, so many.

In no particular order, here they are:

 #1 – I love to challenge myself with this blog. My goal is to always make my next post, my best post. If I can’t, hopefully no one calls me out on it.

Poetry is a new challenge for me. My poem yesterday was 400 words and it took me three hours to write. I felt like I was trying to solve a murder mystery, but with words.

Writing is all about putting words in the correct order. Poetry is no different. It’s a literary jigsaw puzzle.

#2 – I’ve gotten to the point where there are times I will write stuff down with the sole purpose of saving it as a draft and never posting it. Why? Because there are some things I’d rather not share. I’m sure many of you can relate. But then it eats away at me that I have this great content just sitting there staring back at me. It feels like I have to get something off my chest, but can’t.

That’s where poetry comes in. Poems allow me to say what I want to say, without using so many words. I can transform my thoughts into metaphors and create an abstract post with multiple meanings.

The poems I posted can be taken literally, though that’s not necessarily why I wrote them. If you dig deep enough you could probably formulate a bunch of meanings.

The same thing happens with song lyrics. Every song can mean something different to everyone, but the person who wrote the song knows exactly what it’s about. That’s what I’m going for here.

And quite honestly, I think it’s easier this way. If I were to tell you the inspirations behind the two poems I posted, I wouldn’t know where to begin. It’s a convoluted mess of thoughts that wouldn’t make sense if I had to articulate them individually.

The concept behind both those poems came together so quickly in my head. The only way I can describe it is, imagine solving a math problem and only writing down the answer. You didn’t show your work because you got to the answer faster than it would take you to write down your method.

That’s my brain.

#3 – Humour is hard. Listen, I know most of you are used to reading my posts with a smile on your face mixed in with a giggle or seventeen. And I love being able to make that happen.

However, humour is hard. If you find gold at the end of a rainbow, where do you find comedy gold? Home Depot? Not exactly. So I’d rather not fool you with fool’s comedy gold…I have no clue where this is going.

Bottom line: I don’t want to force the humour.

#4 – I like surprising people. I also like being unpredictable.

Simple as that.

If I can produce something completely different than I normally do, I consider that a success. Again, this goes back to challenging myself. Poetry allows me to experiment and be creative.

So, that’s that.

I should be clear in that this blog is not turning into a poetry blog. It’s still the same blog, just don’t be surprised if there is a poem sprinkled in here or there. Hopefully you enjoy them and can appreciate them for what they are.
