Is it just me, or did February feel even shorter than usual? As a result, I only discovered one new song this month and found myself listening to old songs that I’ve heard before, but never really worn out the “Repeat” button on.
So, this list has fewer songs than normal. I’m sure no one will mind.
Kyoto – Phoebe Bridgers
I first heard this song on Saturday Night Live and really liked it. I didn’t really know much about Phoebe Bridgers, so I did some digging and quickly found myself in a rabbit hole. Bugs Bunny was there and everything.
Turns out, Phoebe Bridgers is also in a band called, boygenius. I knew the band because about two years ago I liked their song, Souvenir.
I had discovered that band because one of its three members is Julien Baker. I had somehow stumbled upon her music and liked her songs, Appointments and Turn Out The Lights, and – stop me if you’ve heard this before – did some digging and realized she was in a band called, boygenius.
I probably saw Phoebe Bridgers’ name at the time, but it never stuck with me and I didn’t make that connection without the help of the internet.
Don’t ask me who the third member of the band is – I don’t know. I’m sure two years from now, they’ll come out with a single that I like and I’ll do some digging and realize they are also in boygenius. That’s just how this is going to work. Accept it. I SAID ACCEPT IT.
So, that was a wild expedition I went on a few weeks ago. Small
Anyway, listen to the song I posted above, as well as the three songs I linked in this description. “Appointments” is my favourite from Julien Baker.
Blinding Lights – The Weeknd
Yes, I first heard this song around the time it came out, but it wasn’t until the Super Bowl performance that I cared to listen to it more than a few times.
One thing I learned from this performance is that I’m a fan of hundreds of people dressed the same way, doing a dance routine on a field, while music plays. Oddly specific, but I thought it was great. It’s coordinated chaos and I vote for it to happen every year. It was a nice change from the usual stage at the 50-yard line, with a mosh pit of screamers wearing glow stick bracelets.
It’s A Sin – Pet Shop Boys
I mentioned it in last month’s post, but the Please Rewind show on TV that plays music videos from the 80s, 90s, and 00s, really reintroduces me to songs I’ve heard at some point in my life, by not recently.
This is one of them.
Run Away – Real McCoy
This song just brings me back to birthday parties in the late 90s. Whether it was actually played at those parties, I don’t know. But that’s the scene in my head.
Papa Don’t Preach – Madonna
You can judge me all you want, but the fact of the matter is, this song is a 100% Certified Banger. I believe that’s a phrase. If it’s not, I don’t care. We’ll make it a phrase. This is another song that came back to me on Please Rewind.
I guess the theme this month is up-tempo songs, which is ironic because I’m exhausted.
That’s my list for this month. Hopefully, you found something you liked! If not, we’ll try again in March.
Did you like any of the songs? What have you been listening to lately? Is there anything else you want to tell me?
