Rest of Me

Nowhere to go
nowhere to hide
these pictures with smiles so wide
what can I do
where can I be
have you seen the rest of me

I have this gold star
that shines so bright, right
sit by the moon it gives light, right
getting hungry with every bite, right
wanting more it puts up a fight, right
but every night we go night night, right

I am telling you right now
when you are so far ahead
and so far behind
there is no word to describe it
just an empty space
the dictionary is not large enough
there are so many words
between no and yes
but never the right one to explain
all of this
all of this middle ground where I reside
one day there might be
just one word
that is all I want to know
so I am telling you right now

Have you seen the rest of me
where can I be
what can I do
these pictures with smiles so wide
nowhere to hide
nowhere to go

Show me something I cannot see
you may just bring out the best in me
teach me knowledge until you can’t
I will walk in circles until I pant
these old shirts may gain a stain
but just send me back home again

It’s never perfect, I know
trying to find the ending to another show
quite frankly
it makes me silent but cranky
watching the wheel continue to turn
but who cares
when it carries me to places
I’ve never been
but seen too many times before
how am I supposed to care anymore
fill me with hope
until tomorrow comes
I’ll replace it with a bag of nope
what do I do then
because it’s never perfect, I know

These pictures with smiles so wide
nowhere to hide
what can I do
nowhere to go
where can I be
have you seen the rest of me
it was the best of me.

About Paul

I think of my blog as an all-you-can-read buffet. There's something for everyone and complimentary mints at the door as you leave.

  1. This poem really spoke to me this morning. There is a restlessness in us who are on the road of self-empowerment, self improvement, self-awareness. We want to be the best version of ourselves and when we reach what seems to be a high point we don’t rest there for long and the quest continues…namaste~Brandi

Whew! There for a moment I was afraid it was a bag of rope. Now that’s all behind you, I hope!
