I Don’t Know How To Explain This

How am I supposed to write an introduction after a title like that? I have no idea. So allow me to fill this first paragraph with words that have nothing to do with the topic I’m about to discuss. That way, it looks legitimate, I look smart, and you look ready to read further. Mission accomplished!

Now that that’s out of the way, I actually have to think of how to word what I want to say.

I once applied for a job, but didn’t hear a response from the company until six months later. Every single day, from the time I applied to the time I heard from them, I couldn’t get the company out of my head. Something in me knew I would hear from them.

Even five months later when there was no response, something kept telling me, “They’re going to send you an email.” And then they did. And then I got the job.

I wasn’t even surprised when I finally heard from them. It was more like, “Yeah, I’ve been expecting this. Ho hum.”

You can call that positive thinking, desperation, a coincidence, or me just getting lucky.

What if I told you that sort of thing happens to me a lot? Not the part where I hear from an employer six months down the road, but the part where I can feel it coming.

Now before you send me off to Hogwarts or a psych ward, just keep reading.

The other night, I attended a hockey game. Earlier that day I came across a photo on social media that I had been tagged in last year. It was a group photo from a camping trip (circa 2012) I had gone on with friends from school. The girl who posted it, lived directly across the hall from me back in 2010.

And that photo had me reminiscing of the good old days and how enjoyable that year was.

Fast forward to the hockey game and who is sitting in my section? The girl who posted that picture. She was there with her brother, who is definitely reading this right now. Hey, Richard!

We hadn’t seen each other since earlier this year and hadn’t spoken in a month or two. Yet there we were sharing laughs during the first intermission because we just so happened to be sitting in the same section. Never mind the fact we attended the same game, but the same section.

Coincidence? Maybe. Probably. I don’t know.

A few days before the hockey game, a person I went to high school with randomly popped up in my head. We weren’t friends, didn’t hang out in the same circles, and never really spoke to each other outside of maybe a couple of words.

Important to note, I finished high school seven years ago.

Back to the hockey game…

As I was returning to my seat after the first intermission, I saw that person from high school walking the other way.

And in my head I said, “Of course I would see them. I was just thinking about them.”

Anyone weirded out yet? Speak now.

The last dream I had before I woke up Wednesday morning was about a picture I had posted on Instagram before I went to sleep. It was a short, two minute dream. It was of me pulling up the Instagram app to see how many likes there were on the photo. In my dream, there were 36 likes.

I woke up, unplugged my phone from the charger, and opened Instagram. I’ll give you one guess as to how many likes were on that photo.

Yup. 36.

Dreams do come true, I guess?

I don’t know how to explain it. Another coincidence?

The other day I was watching an episode of The Office and they made a quick reference to Tonya Harding – the figure skater who’s inner circle hired someone to attack her main competitor.

Later that night, I was reading a book written by a former basketball player. I only read one chapter. In that one chapter, there was a quick reference to Tonya Harding.

Coincidence? I have no clue.

Small things like that happen to me multiple times a week, though. Where I will see “something” for the first time and then within a day or two I’ll see it again somewhere completely unrelated.

And it’s not like, “Oh I saw the number five on my keyboard and then again on my cellphone. Oooohhh freaky!” No. It’s stranger than that.

I only remember that Tonya Harding example because when it happened I decided that enough was enough and I was going to start keeping track of those “incidents” in a note on my phone.

I know, this sounds very weird and most of you are probably lost.

From afar, you can say these things are all coincidences. And sure, they fit the definition. But as the person who experiences them on a regular basis, the word “coincidence” lost its meaning years ago.

Now I sound crazy.

There have been some instances where a name pops into my head – normally of someone I haven’t heard from lately/don’t really talk to – and then in the next couple of days I’ll receive a text or social media comment from them.

What does this all mean? I don’t know. Probably nothing.

I just think it’s cool. It makes me believe that there’s way more to life than our five senses can ever tell us. Maybe it’s a nod from God so I know that He’s watching. I don’t know.

My life just seems to be full of coincidences and situations where my mind just seems to know things before they happen.

All this being said, no, I will not pick your lottery numbers for you.

Has anything I mentioned in this post made you nod your head in a, “Yes, that happens to me too” sort of way?

“All this being said, no, I will not pick your lottery numbers for you.” DAMN!

Sorry, nothing of this sort happens to me. That is, I don’t see the moment coming, I sometimes feel, I have already felt this, lived this, this has happened before Deja-vu .

You’re a wizard. The only strange thing that recently happened was when I saw Colleen – the not-so-twintuition. I hadn’t seen her in over three years but something told me I needed to visit her immediately haha as it turns out, she needed a friend. And then I obnoxiously started singing a Janis Joplin song and she was like “I’ve had that song stuck in my head for a year now. It’s like I knew you were coming…” Your situations are way more impressive though.

I love it when things like this happen. I wouldn’t call it coincidence at all! 😉

I love reading about things like this. It happens to me too, check out my post a few months back ….

    Coincidence or Synchronicity?

I think our minds are a lot more powerful than we know, a sixth sense or law of attraction?

I’m trying to think of ways in which you can capitalize on this super power, but I’m not coming up with anything. It’s early, though. I might actually still be asleep. I’ll get back to you on that…

      Yes! You experience this too?

      • Yep! Once my Mum called me to deliver some bad news. As soon as her name flashed up on my screen I knew what she had called to say.
A few weeks ago I entered one of those random shopping centre competitions, and as I entered I knew I was going to win. You could call it wishful thinking, but I felt like it was stronger than that. I wasn’t surprised when I got the call. This sort of stuff happens to me all the time, and nobody ever believes me!

Well I believe you! A similar thing happened to me when I was in Grade 8. I bought a raffle ticket at the book fair and when I dropped it in the box I just knew that I was going to win. Later that day they announced my name over the PA system and I wasn’t even shocked! Good to know there’s someone else out there who experiences this!

Does deja vu count? That freaks me out enough, but this other stuff I haven’t felt. I feel like you should be able to use this power in some way…at least buy lotto tickets for yourself, if not other people, right!?

I don’t think I’ve experience deja vu. Maybe it’s a one or the other sort of deal. I’m terrible at the lottery! I always pick the numbers that don’t show up. Not even one of them lol

Actually, yes, things like this do happen to me. Not as awesomely overt as yours have been, but small things from dreams that have correlations in real life do jump out at me. Of course, since I’m thinking about it, I don’t have any examples, but believe me, it happens to me too!! (the IG thing is scary though! :D)

This happens to me quite often. I love that I’m not alone in it. My favorite example is from last year. I was flying across the country to visit a boy, and when I was sitting in the terminal waiting to board my plane, the announcer came on calling for John Doe (we’ll say) to report to his gate. John Doe was also the name of the boy I was going to visit. When it happened the 4th time, I finally pulled out my phone & recorded a voice memo. TOO weird. Of all the names in the world, and all of the terminals, and all of the days for that man to miss his flight…

That’s freaky! That would also be a fun prank to play on someone lol. I’m glad this sort of thing happens to other people too. I wasn’t sure if people would understand what I was trying to say.

You might be more aware of someone or something if you’ve recently thought about it, which makes it seem like a coincidence. Perhaps if you didn’t think about your old classmate, you wouldn’t have noticed them in such a crowded place.

But nevertheless, I’ve also had moments like this. I specifically remember in sixth grade, there was a boy in the class across the hall from mine. The first time we talked, for some reason, I remember thinking, “I feel like we’ll be good friends later on”. Three years later in high school, we became friends and now it’s been almost ten years!

Oh yes, things like this (and more) have happened to me – big time. It’s called ‘Synchronicity’ – have a read of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronicity
I think some time in the distant future there’ll be a discovery of what all this is about. I think it’s more likely to be scientific than psychic, but we don’t know yet.
Much as I dislike experiments on animals, did you know that birds have extra cones in their eyes so they have a better (and probably far different) sense of colour than we humans have? It may well be that we’ve got senses that haven’t yet been defined that make what you and I experience quite ordinary – to us, at any rate.

Thanks for sharing that! I’m going to look into it more. Yeah I’ve never really thought of it as me being psychic because it’s not until the 2nd occasion occurs that I realize the coincidence has occurred (if that makes sense).
I did not know that about birds. Very cool. Animals are capable of so much. Some believe that dogs can sense disasters coming, though I don’t know if that’s been proven yet.

I’m a big fat skeptic & a dirty heretical non-believer, in general. I’d like to see next week’s list, though, because I am intrigued.

Part of me wants to say that it’s mis-remembering the order of events or applying too much meaning to the universe’s chaos. But, who knows? Maybe you’ll make a slightly slimmer skeptic out of me yet. 🙂

    • Paul says:

Haha it’s definitely not me mis-remembering the order of events. I don’t know if there’s any meaning to these coincidences (likely not), but it happens a lot.

      • Ariel Lynn says:

Well… if you think there’s some meaning, or even if you think it’s possible that it’s not completely meaningless, then it does have meaning. You might not know what it is, but it has meaning – or the potential for it – to you. 🙂

I’d still like to hear about next week’s note. Are you gonna keep tracking these coincidences (I only call them that since we don’t know what else they might be…. yet)?

      • Paul says:

I’m going to try and track them as long as I remember them. I haven’t run into a coincidence since I posted this post though so who knows when the next one will come.

I hope it doesn’t work like birthday wishes & if you tell someone it won’t keep happening! Maybe now that you’ve revealed your super power, it’s gone into hiding!! 😥

Paul, you are not alone. I’ve had a lot of these “weird coincidences” since I was young. For a while, I thought I was psychic as a kid, until I realized that I wasn’t. I was just really good a being lucky. But then there were certain things I just couldn’t explain. Like precognition and premonitions. How would I know that my nephew was going to walk into the kitchen, bump into the cabinet and cause a knife to fall from overhead onto him? I didn’t. Until I stopped it from happening, almost unconsciously. That one I still can’t explain…
But don’t feel alone. Funny enough, I have a friend who has this happen to him, like, ALL THE TIME. He just gravitates to these kinds of things… it’s weird. 😛
