Forever

Always cut short
moments sent to the airport
packed away so tight
everything lost overnight
and maybe it’s just me
who looks up and tries to see how
dreams can reveal so much
but hide their ending
wake up to feel my mind bending
shh no one make a peep
maybe I can go back to sleep
to just see it through
so tired of cutting off to start new
it’s like reading a story
about tuesdays with Morrie
but the final pages are missing
and it’s like taking a drink
but spitting it out in the sink
and it’s like starting to run
but my laces come undone
always taking off too soon
only making it to noon
and all the way there is only halfway back
might as well take out a snack
just stand here awhile
wonder if anyone ever goes the extra mile
to make you smile
or if it’s just the way
we all go about our day
drawing circles around each other
before putting an X
like a game of tic-tac-toe
it’s hard finding three in a row
because that too gets cut off at two
forcing the players to start anew
and this is the way it goes
I wonder if anyone else knows
how hard it is to connect the dots
one line carrying so many thoughts
getting lost on it’s way to the other side
better draw another right beside
now draw a third
create a herd
four and five make their dive
all the way up to seven and eleven
more lines shooting across the page
never reaching their final stage
abruptly stopping in the middle
just as confusing as a riddle
but maybe one day the dots will connect
and create their own timeline
from start to finish
the story won’t diminish
and I won’t wake up too soon
days will go past noon
books will have a final chapter
my mind will be filled with laughter
and this is the message I hope to be sending
when I finally have a moment that is never-ending.
