It is the dance we do when we face something new
it is the second look we take when the first one is cake
it is the turn of the head at every word that is said
as we tiptoe around corners down low
unsure of where to go or how much to show
because once our feet get curious
we might as well be waist deep
you know only a truck can back up with a simple beep
what happens next is anyone’s guess
a bet Vegas would consider a mess
for a simple glance is hard to make and even harder to take
when questions start to run through
putting them in a cup seems like the safe thing to do
a crazy straw will never bring them out all at once
to meet the answers that are in front of your face
but you wish you had a telescope to help you see; nope, tee hee
I guess two eyes and an ear will have to do
to see and hear what you want them to
until the candle is too much to handle
a burning flame too lame for questions
might as well create a hypothesis that is hit or miss
which you miss because you miss
chalking it up as a conspiracy
all that remains is dust that covers the facts
and the truth buried beneath unrelenting thumbtacks
maybe we can find words left on the table
can this poem turn into a fable
where the meaning is hidden in fiction
like all the guilt and sorrow felt in every tomorrow
the books of history shall remain a mystery
and never draw a question mark in the dark
because the streetlight will take care of you after midnight
that is where the truth lies
until the sun full of doubt rises at dawn
to cast light on a body that lost its shadow
when it abandoned its place in line
to search for the truth that could easily be found
if it weren’t so hard to run up that hill
and face the fear of falling down.

Another great one there, Paul. I will admit I giggled like a schoolgirl at the “tee hee” part. Completely unexpected.

Witty I admit. I can’t deny that… And because it’s written the way it is, I have to read it twice. Such a task is never nice. But, oh, it draws me in again. This poem is something I must pin…
