Painting The Picture

Breathe in

Pencil markings fill an empty canvas
They are the guideline
They are the base
They are the precursor
For the picture you wish to paint

What is erased will be redone
To improve
To perfect
To validate
Images you desire

And then the pencil breaks
What you see is not what you drew
Look around you
The options are few
It’s too late to start anew

So you carry on
With determination
With faith
With hope
The picture will one day be complete

Confusion checks in
Pain checks in
Worry checks in
Doubt checks in
Confidence checks out

They make themselves comfortable
On the desk
In the room
Of the house
Within your head

One day it will be clear
The markings that once dominated the canvas
Are missing
Washed away by the rain
Vibrant colours set the scene

The sun will shine
You’ll know why
There won’t be any doubt
No reason to pout
Bliss

There will be no more questions
Only answers
There will be no more judgments
Only a final ruling
Clarity

The road will be clear
No hesitation
No doubt
No fear
Smooth sailing towards a sun that never sets

It won’t be temporary
It won’t hide anything
Your teeth will glisten
Your cheeks will hurt
Your heart will beat

It started with a pencil
That made mistakes
That started over
That tried something new
Every line meant something to you

The song will change
The lyrics will stay the same
As they were meant to be
With the melody
You were always supposed to hear

Believe you will get there
Maybe not today
Maybe not tomorrow
Definitely not yesterday
But one day

Breathe out

This was incredibly beautiful. Filled with sadness yet determination and then personal relief? Personal acceptance? I loved it. And am wondering if writing it was cathartic. This was great, Paul. A poem I will read again…..many times.

  10. Binge-reading your latest stuff and loving it, of course! While you took a break for summer camp, I took a break, because well, life. So it feels like it’s been forever but anyway, I know I’m late but it’s good to have you back! 😀
