What Do You Blog About?

I’m of the assumption that every time a blogger tells someone they have a blog, they’re immediately asked, “What do you blog about?” I suppose that’s a natural question for people to ask a blogger. Personally, I hate being asked that question. I don’t know how to answer it.

Hopefully, by the end of this post, I will.

Normally I just list off things I’ve written about and hope a picture is painted. I’m not good at art.

There really is no theme to my blog. I mean, I started as a sports blog, but that lasted two months before it just turned into a car wash of things.

A car wash of things…I have no idea what I just said but it sounds smart so I’ll leave it in there!

I think a mistake some bloggers make when starting a blog is feeling the need to define their blog. They feel like they must stay in a certain lane and stick to the same genre every single post. For some people, that works. For others, like me, it’s impossible.

I’d rather have the freedom to write about anything I want.

On the WordPress Reader there are Recommended Blogs under various categories. Let’s go through those categories and see which one my blog would fall under.

Art & Design – Nope! I told you I’m not good at art.

Books – Nope!

Business & Technology – Nope!

Crafts & Fashion – Ha, Nope!

Culture – Nope!

Family – Nope!

Fiction & Poetry – Nope! Though I did write an ode, once…

Food – Nope! I write about food, but not nearly enough to be a food blog.

Health & Wellness – Nope! I like pizza.

Humour – Maybe? Recently I’ve gone the humour route. Older posts are serious, though.

Longreads – Does 1000-word posts count? Probably not. So, Nope!

Magazines – Nope! Though if someone wants to pay me to turn this into one…

Musings & Personal – Hey, we might have found a winner.

News & Current Events – Nope!

Photography – Nope!

Popular Culture & Entertainment – Nope! I’m the entertainment here.

Portfolios – Nope!

Religion – Nope!

Science & Nature – Nope!

Sports & Gaming – I started as a sports blog, but stopped that theme. I do have many posts about sports, though.

Travel – Nope!

Websites – Aren’t we all? Not in this sense, I suppose. Nope!

Writing & Blogging – Nope!

So the only categories that I can somewhat relate to are: humour, musings & personal, and sports & gaming. I’m a bit disappointed. I don’t know if I fit the mould of any of those. Not completely, at least.

Sure, I write things that are funny. But what about when I don’t? Can I still call myself a humour blog?

Same goes for musings & personal. I rarely talk about my personal life. I share likes and dislikes, but I don’t give you a whole background story of who I am. This is the Internet!

And then there’s sports & gaming. I’ve moved away from this, though I do write about sports every now and then.

I don’t know how blogs are selected to be listed as a “Recommended Blog”. Would I like to be there? Sure. Who wouldn’t? I just don’t know if I fall under any of their categories.

So what am I?

I feel like my blog is going through an identity crisis. Have I become a blog about nothing?

The thought of signing in to WordPress and writing a post under the same genre, every single time, is making my head spin. I couldn’t do it.

I’ve gone from serious posts about sports, to an honest post about school, to an attempt at a poem, to talking about how ketchup is controversial, to a list of what people do at sit-down restaurants, to complaining about slow walkers.

If anything, this blog is confused and maybe concussed.

Who writes about this nonsense, puts it all together, and calls it a blog? I do. I’m proud of it.

I can’t put a label on it. I can’t describe it. Ask me to tell you what my blog is about and I’ll pretend I don’t speak your language, just to avoid the question. Okay, maybe not, but you get the point.

If someone is reading this and is thinking about starting a blog, my advice is simple.

You don’t need to be a sports blog. You don’t need to be a fashion blog. You don’t need to be an entertainment blog. You don’t need to be a food blog. You don’t need to be a music blog. You don’t need to be a travel blog. You don’t need to write an introductory post and declare your blog as one specific thing.

Sure, you can if you like, but you don’t need to.

You just need you.

So to answer the question, What do you blog about?

I write about ideas that are in my head.

My blog is your official tour.

I love this. My blog def lacks a theme. I feel like blogs without a theme are more fun anyways. You get to see the real personality of the blogger.

I’m horrified every time someone asks me that question. “Stupid stuff…” is my answer….and it’s pretty accurate and deserves its own category.

I like the ending “My blog is your official tour.” You should get shirts made up. It really is a great line. I started out thinking that I would write all about the antics that go on with kids and teaching because I often have thought that they never told us any of this at “teacher school.” But I’ve only had a few that were actually about teaching. I’m very careful to not make any student thing too recognizable. I used to use a pseudonym Elizabeth Canavan in case the administration where I work thought I was walking a thin line, but wordpress publishes my email which defeats the purpose. So I changed back to Barb Knowles. I think that I like Elizabeth Canavan better though. At any rate (my answer is turning into a blog post), I usually try to be funny and hope that everyone in the whole world reads my blog and finds it humorous, and funny enough that they want to come back. Except the ones that are serious. Then I hope that the whole world reads them and finds them serious enough to want to come back. So the overall answer to question about what do I blog about? “I don’t know.”

I should get shirts made! Yeah it’s tough having a blog where you want to say anything but know that anyone can read it, especially employers. If the administration ever comes after you for something you say on your blog, send them to me. I’ll be your lawyer with my smooth talking writing skills. I like your blog strategy haha

I could use your lawyer skills (are you studying to be a lawyer or are you just smooth talking) on my blog just posted, except I think that my bosses have already noticed that i have ADD. (hint, hint, you can go read it now)

I’m like you but thought there was something wrong with me! You just made me feel like it’s ok to be … well … me. I write about funny stuff that’s happened to me, then the complete other end of the spectrum about things that have inspired me. If I had lots of followers I might confuse them, other blogs site say. I guess I just suck it up and see what happens.

See I thought the same thing too earlier on when I had this blog. I thought it was important to cater to the expectations of the reader. That’s completely wrong. So now I just write about whatever I want and people seem to read it anyways.

I don’t think I have a single, certain thing that I always blog about, but I tend to post a lot of musings and rants on my college experience (with occasional poetry). Basically, I blog what I want to blog about, and make it relatable to people who have similar interests. 🙂

That’s one of the reasons why I followed your blog, the other being you said nice things about Canadians haha. I like it when bloggers just write about whatever comes to their mind.
